July 21, 2013

The Maryknoll missionaries have a saying, “Our job is to go where we are needed but not wanted and stay until we are wanted, but not needed.” In March of 2003 when I arrived on a “temporary” assignment, I was not very much wanted, but very much needed. I believe that after ten years, the opposite is now true.

So when Bishop Mark asked me to take a new assignment last month I agreed to do so, not just out of obedience,  but because I think it is time. As an older priest once told me, “if you can’t make a difference after ten years, a few more years won’t matter.”

Thus, on July 31st, I will be moving to Holy Name Parish in Ebensburg (my home parish), to become their pastor. I fully expect this to be my final assignment, since I am now 65 years old. Please pray for me as you have while I was among you here.

Good-bye’s are never easy, including this one. But OLV is blessed to be receiving one of the best priests of our diocese as its new pastor - Fr. Neil Dadey, currently pastor of St. John’s, Bellefonte. Please take good care of him. I know he will be good for you. I just regret he must put up with the pew and carpet replacement when he arrives. I certainly did not plan on not     being here when we scheduled the work.

I wish to thank the many, many, many people of OLV, young and not-so-young, who        supported me over the past decade. I appreciate all that everyone has done for the parish and/or me personally. You will always be a part of me.

My final message: Continue to be good to your young parishioners and to be generous to the poor. They will be your salvation. And no matter what, give praise and thanksgiving to Our Lord, through His Mother, Our Lady of Victory.

This announcement was not planned to coincide with my previously-planned July time off, but it does. I guess it’s God’s will. I will be back on the 27th of July for my last hurrah. See you then.

Change in Mass Location: On Monday, August 5th, we will begin the process of removing the old pews and carpet from the church and installing the new. During this time, the Sunday and Holy Day Masses will be celebrated in the school gymnasium, the daily Masses will be in the Gardiner Social Hall, and Eucharistic Adoration will take place in the Sapia Conference Room in the Activities Center. Saturday confessions will be in the gym; Thursday confessions will be in the Activities Center.  We will make every effort to minimize the inconvenience, but some patience will be required. As the sisters used to tell us when I was in grade school, “Offer it up.”

2012-2013 Financial Reports and 2013-14 Parish Budgets: Copies of the 2013-14 Parish Budget and of the final Financial Report for the fiscal year which ended June 30, 2013 will be in the Gathering Space. Please feel free to take one home if you wish.
